Modern Garden Design Brief

The clients have undertaken extensive renovations to the interior of their property and are now turning their attentions to the garden, which is in a state of disrepair. The boundaries are a mishmash of different materials and the existing decking is rotted and unusable. There are several different levels in the space, which are dictated by ground level of the adjoining gardens. The clients would like to renovate the entire space and include an area for storage.

The New Garden Design Solution

The garden is reorganised into three distinct levels. The existing trees down the right hand boundary will remain. A wide thin storage unit with double doors provides ample storage down the sideway.

Railway sleepers retain the existing soil as well as making a larger bed to feature some plants and improve the view from the lounge doors.

A flat top tree planted outside the side doors will help create a courtyard feel, with cream limestone effect porcelain paving inlaid with an encaustic tile ‘rug’ to add a little extra pizzazz to the side return.

The porcelain paving continues into the main garden, which will feature an L-shaped decked bench seat underplanted with evergreen ferns to create a bank of greenery throughout the year. Steps lead up to an area of lawn, with porcelain stepping stone tiles creating a pathway along the right hand side. Railway sleepers retain the existing trees, and a bed in front of it allows for extra planting.

A raised terrace in the bottom right corner will be large enough to place an outdoor sofa and fire pit. This area will feature an architectural chunky timber pergola, to provide support for the existing wisteria. A beam will jut out over the lawn to create a support from which to hang a swing. The left and rear boundaries will be clad with bespoke hardwood timber slatted fences and Perspex panelling.

A railway sleeper bed at the rear of the garden allows for a change in height. Planting in the garden is simple, strong and architectural with low maintenance evergreens sitting amongst long flowering herbaceous perennials.
