Project Description

Garden Redesign with Raised Decking and Modern Pathways

Project Brief

The clients have lived in their home for several years and are gradually renovating the entire property. One of their favourite places is the conservatory, where they enjoy sitting and looking out onto the garden. However, the substantial level change between the house and the garden makes access difficult and disrupts the visual flow.
They are now seeking a garden design that resolves this level difference, improves the view from the conservatory, and introduces practical storage solutions. The mature beech hedge around the boundary also needs removing, with new fencing installed to create a fresh, cohesive backdrop.

The Design Solution

The main focus of the new design is to correct the level differences and create an accessible, attractive outdoor area that blends seamlessly with the conservatory.

Raised Decking for Better Access

A raised deck constructed from Yellow Balau hardwood boards will sit directly outside the conservatory, flush with the back door. This creates a smooth indoor to outdoor transition. A stainless steel tension wire and rail system provides edge protection while keeping the view open and uninterrupted.

Multi Level Pathway System

From the deck, the garden transitions down to a raised pathway made from large paving slab stepping stones set within a gravel infill. Railway sleepers will retain the edges and give the path definition.

This pathway then steps down again to meet a second paved path running parallel to the house, which dog legs towards the far corner of the garden and leads to a new shed, giving the clients valuable and discreet storage space.

Updated Boundaries

All existing boundaries will be lined with new hit and miss timber fencing. This style provides an attractive contemporary appearance while enhancing airflow and privacy. The modern fencing creates a cohesive, clean frame around the new layout.

Planting Scheme

The planting will focus on texture, form and seasonal interest. A selection of shrubs and herbaceous perennials will be chosen for their structure and longevity.

The palette will remain predominantly white and green, with ornamental grasses adding movement throughout the year. Long flowering perennials ensure the garden feels calm, elegant and inviting from spring to autumn.

Before & After Garden Transformation

The Garden Before

The existing garden lacked functional access from the conservatory due to the sharp level change. The mature beech hedge dominated the boundaries, restricting light and giving the space a heavy and enclosed feel. Storage was limited, and the garden layout did not encourage movement or meaningful use of the space.

The Garden After

The redesigned garden now offers a smooth, accessible connection between the house and the outdoor areas through the new raised hardwood deck and stepped pathways. Modern fencing has replaced the old hedge, instantly refreshing the boundaries and enhancing privacy. The thoughtful mix of planting provides texture and interest throughout the year, while the newly positioned shed ensures practical, well-integrated storage.

The garden now feels cohesive, inviting and perfectly suited to relaxed enjoyment from the conservatory or while moving around the space.

Design Inspiration, Sketches and Concept Development

Before construction begins, a series of design sketches and concept visuals help establish the look and feel of the space. These include the reimagined deck layout, the stepped pathways, and the improved boundary treatments.
